How Google Determines Fresh Content

Google’s updated freshness algorithm scores each web page based on how current the content is and type of search query. This post takes an in-depth look at how the search engine scores results. Observations include:

  • Regularly updated content gets scored differently from content that doesn’t change.
  • Websites that add new pages at a greater rate may earn a higher freshness score than sites that add content less frequently (blogs are a great example).
  • Links from sites with a high freshness score may pass along a higher score to the site it’s linking to.
What’s the key takeaway? Evaluate your web content and see what can use an update (remove those old tradeshow schedules) and think about what kinds of content your users would really benefit from.
